Veneers comprise small slices of timber made from hardwood that sandwich a substrate usually a less expensive wood such as plywood. Oak is commonly used in cabinet veneer. The veneer leaf - or flitches as bundles of sliced veneer are known- is then clipped to size before being jointed into usable sized sheets called layons. The more veneer is used the fewer trees need to be consumed. These are used to give cabinetry a timber-constructed look where full timber construction is more expensive or impractical.
Most of the time the interior of a cabinet will have a veneer of some sort -- either a melamine veneer or a real wood veneer. Veneer adds colour texture and tone to an otherwise muted space.
