It was in all the papers at the timehow on Friday July 2 1982 a young man named Larry Walters who had served as an Army cook in Vietnam had settled himself into a Sears Roebuck lawn chair. In 1982 Larry Walters achieved his life long dream to fly when he attached some weather balloons to his lawn chair.
On July 2 1982 with the untying of anchors Walters then age 33 went off into the wild blue yonder. Fortunately Larry had already popped enough balloons to begin slowly drifting back to earth. But he was under arrest.
Larry hiked into the forest and shot himself on October 6 1993. On July 2 1982 he would take flight from the backyard of his girlfriends home in San Pedro California by tying 42 8-foot helium-filled weather balloons tiered into four layers to a Sears-purchased aluminum lawn chair angled back at a 45-degree angle using gallon jugs of water as ballast. He eventually landed in power lines near Long Beach California creating a blackout for 20 minutes.
At 11 am. Walters intended to fly only to an altitude of 30 feet or so before leveling off while munching sandwiches and pounding a. His story however inspired a generation of lawn chair piloting balloonists.
Dubbed Inspiration I the flying machine consisted of an ordinary patio chair with 45 helium-filled weather balloons. However Jerry kept the chair and later loaned it to the San Diego Air and Space Museum for an exhibit in 2014. Larry Walters who achieved dubious fame in 1982 when he piloted a lawn chair attached to helium balloons 16000 feet above Long Beach has committed suicide.
Larrys Lawnchair is the Official documentary of Larry Lawnchair Walters the 1982 Lawnchair Balloon pilot. He never married and had no children. Sadly Lawnchair Larry committed suicide in 1993.
